Having the company's board meeting here is always great. We get their leftovers from breakfast and lunch. Good coffee, pastries. It's nice to come to work to that.
After getting a little sideswiped yesterday, I'm back on the saddle. Went to MRR after work yesterday to do my reviews and Top Ten. Didn't really get anything good to review, but I was excited to see they gave me a hardcore record. I like the idea of tossing records to reviewers that fall outside their general area of interest. I like some hardcore, but I'm picky about what I like. In general I'd say I stick to the more popular HC stuff around today: Government Warning, Sex/Vid, Silla Electrica (not really popular...trendy maybe, but still fucking killer!), some of the stuff on No Way records, the Scandinavian more melodic hardcore I love. So I'm not oblivious. But it was a good way to shake up my reviews.
Otherwise I got some Italian band that sounded like a total paint-by-numbers punk band, a Norton Benny Joy 45 and the Colors LP on Rave Up. I had been looking forward to hearing that Colors record, but jesuschrist it sucked. Their "Rave Up" single is one of my favorite power pop records. This album was 17 songs of them chasing a radio pop song circa 1981. Bleeech.
My top ten was a little harder than usual. Hal, Adam and Ron were doing a radio show, so they'd pulled some of the new records. Some girl was doing reviews and had some of the stuff I'd wanted to listen to (I noticed as I was leaving she wasn't even reviewing the records I'd wanted to hear; she was just listening to them, argh!) and there just weren't as many (good) records this time around. I came up with 10 decent records though.
Cissie asked if Sarah & I wanted to do a slot on the MRR radio show when she gets back. I'm up for it. It'd be pretty cool to do. Maybe I can rope Mitch & Missy to get down with it and we can do a whole show together sometime. Throw in Brace for comic relief.
It's Thursday, which means it's almost Friday, which means the weekend is just about here. There's a going away party this weekend, a backyard party I'm actually more interested in going to, Golden Gate Fields has weiner dog races...a full weekend. And my brother gets back from Europe on Monday. The KDVS record swap is next weekend (so glad it's not this weekend; I'm broke) and looking ahead, the Hunches are playing the Hemlock in about two weeks. Lotsa good shit.
